I think other than the Uniden scanners, AOR is about the only other game in town that can pretty much do all of the digital modes including DMR but I forget which AOR model(s) have those abilities. Icom's past president stated they will never support DMR because of their NXDN line but Icom does have a new president as of late so who knows if that stance will ever change or not. I use DSD+ Fastlane for DMR decoding from one of my 8600's IF output if needed.ĭMR is in direct competition with Icom's NXDN radios.

Something about that large radio and its large and smooth tuning knob and other controls keeps drawing me to it!Īs was mentioned, the 8600's lack of DMR is a disappointment but one I was well aware of before purchase of my 1st one. The R8600 blows the doors off the others but I still find myself using the R9000 a lot. I've never seen them below $2300 unless there was a rebate involved but I've honestly not been watching the prices either as I don't need a 3rd 8600! I can't say I've noticed any price increases on the 8600's though when browsing sites like say HRO or others.

Just the nature of these beasts.I bought a 2nd 8.95 so the price dropped for me.īoth of them did have $100 dollar rebates as well so the total was really 2399.95 after the rebate checks arrived. If you are scanning a group of frequencies that cross these boundaries you will hear a constant chatter of relays clattering. They have relays that click when they cross certain frequency bands. Like many of the other high end radios like the Icoms and the AORs they click. The AOR spanks it as far as versatility in that respect. It does let you adjust the size of the banks but that is the only good thing I can say about it. Download the manual and you'll get a good idea. The channel and bank system on the Icom is terrible though.

Right up there with my AR-5000+3 in that respect. Very sensitive and resistant to intermod. It has great performance on VHF/UHF and does quite well on HF too. Not a terribly complicated repair but I wasn't comfortable subjecting that expensive of a radio to my ham fisted soldering. Had to have some minor work done by Icom a while back.
